The process of building a community garden at Magnuson Park is divided into phases. Phase I involved designing the garden. It was brought to a close on November 15, 2000 after the receipt of soil test information and the submittal of the final Small and Simple grant report to the Department of Neighborhoods. Barker Landscape Architects presented the final design document, Magnuson Community Garden Design Report to the Coalition on August 28, 2000. Phase II includes creating drawings for construction, fund raising, and the actual physical building the garden. It was launched with a second application to the Department of Neighborhoods for a second Small and Simple grant for further development of the design for the garden -- construction drawings for earthwork, drainage, and utilities including the core irrigation system -- submitted on November 20, 2000. The grant was received and work was completed in September 2001. See Final Report S00009 In November 2000 Seattle voters passed Proposition #l, the “Parks for All” bond issue, which allocated $118,600 to help develop the Magnuson Community Garden. A small $750 Neighborhood Outreach Grant was applied for and was received in September 2001 to create a sign kiosk at the garden site. A two-sided sign kiosk was placed at the southwest end of the proposed Magnuson Community Garden site by the Parks Department for garden use. Wilson Sign company created a signboard for the south side of the sign kiosk. It was installed on October 19, 2001. See Report O01015 In September 2001 the Garden applied for a Department of Neighborhoods Large Projects Matching Award to begin construction of the garden. In December 2001 the city announced a $150,000 award to the garden. The amount was matched by volunter labor, cash donations, and in-kind donations of materials and supplies. Work on the award was completed in March 2004. See Final Report B02020 |
