NORTH CASCADES EXPLORER TOURS
There's so much more to the North Cascades than driving Highway 20we promise! Experience the North Cascades and Skagit River Hydroelectric Project up close by getting off the beaten path and going "behind-the-scenery" - including a powerhouse visit on this guided shuttle tour, which includes stops at places that usually are passed by those who drive across the North Cascades Highway. Along the way you'll enjoy a picnic lunch and take several short, easy hikes while learning about the fascinating natural and cultural history of the area. Each tour is led by a National Park Ranger and a naturalist from the North Cascades Institute. Since these outings are limited to only 13 participants, they can be highly personalized to match the needs and interests of those on the tour.

Your tour will begin in the historic company town of Newhalem, where you will learn about the early days of the Skagit Project; walk through beautiful Ladder Creek Falls Gardens; and view the inside of the Gorge Powerhouse from the Visitor's Gallery. You will then travel by shuttle van to the company town of Diablo, where you'll visit the famous incline lift, which once carried entire train cars up the side of Sourdough Mountain. Also, you will be able to visit the famous art deco lobby and viewing gallery of Diablo Powerhouse - normally closed to the public - and see the power generators up-close.. After lunch, the rest of the trip will focus on the natural history, biodiversity, and geology of the North Cascades, including stops at some of the Park's eye-popping scenic vistas.
