More than 100 City Light chefs entered a tasty, favorite recipe, using a more energy-efficient cooking method. City Light is proud to give you the Cookin’ with Kilowatts online cookbook. Bon Appetit!



There are numerous ways, large and small, to conserve electricity. City Light is raising awareness about energy use, while having some fun at the same time, by putting a spin on your most creative, tastiest recipe. Our Cookin' with Kilowatts contest challenges you to create or use a recipe that you would typically bake in an oven using an electric cooking method that uses less electricity than an oven. For instance, as you see in the chart below, a microwave uses a third less energy than an oven.

And of course, these recipes have the added benefit of keeping the kitchen cooler this summer.

Contest guideliines
  • There is no entry fee.
  • Submit your recipe at seattle.gov/light/recipe (or call to have a form mailed to you).
  • Photo entry is optional. Photo must be a jpeg.
  • Entrants grant City Light full rights to reproduce, re-use, and distribute the recipes and winning recipes without limitation or compensation. By submission of a recipe, entrant agrees to these conditions.
  • Entries must be submitted between July 1, 2013 - September 30, 2013.
  • City Light customers will vote for their favorites on Seattle City Light's Facebook page and on the website.
  • A panel of judges selected by City Light will select the three winners from the 10 finalists.
  • Winners will be notified by email and announced publicly on October 9, 2013.
