Joint Use Engineering

Joint Use is the sharing of space on a single set of poles with multiple utilities. These utilities may be power, cable TV, phone service, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), fiber optic data, wireless small cell antennas, and others.

Seattle City Light’s Joint Use engineering team is responsible for the management, engineering, design, construction, regulatory, legal and contractual oversight of all third-party communications and power space attachments. Seattle City Light currently has more than 150 license agreements with various telecommunication companies, cable companies, schools, cities, government agencies and other private parties.

City Light is a utility leader in the co-location of wireless equipment. In 1998, we began locating wireless antennas on high-voltage transmission towers and have since expanded into the use of our wood-pole distribution system. We accommodate a wide variety of installations from small cell-deployments to more traditional site builds on high voltage and communications towers.
