Regional Hospital Increases Patient Care Space -- Utility Costs Rise Only 7% |
|
|
Work with public utility creates big savings for medical center
Who:
- Harborview Medical Center’s Director of Engineering, Geoff Glass
- Seattle City Light Project Manager, John Owen,
- Project consultants, Engineering Economics, Inc. and Landis and Staefa,
What: Expansion of the Puget Sound area’s regional trauma center, Harborview Medical Center (approx. 460,000 square feet), which includes a whole new trauma center.
- The project increased floor space by 63% yet utility costs rose only by 7%. The work is a collaborative effort between the private and public sector to save money, energy, and resources.
- Electric service is critical to hospital functions. Reducing the demand for electricity while at the same time increasing the amount of floor space is a model for other medical centers looking for ways to increase efficiency and meet the demand for additional space.
- High efficiency equipment such as chillers, lighting, and variable speed pumps and fans were installed with help from Seattle City Light rebates. To insure that the measures operate at peak performance, Harborview Director of Engineering, Geoff Glass hired Engineering Economics, Inc. to conduct building commissioning. To protect their investment Harborview was the first Seattle City Light customer to purchase Utility Cost Watch, a software service designed to monitor and manage utility expenses.
When: Project date 1996 - 1998
Where: Harborview Medical Center, 325 9th Avenue, Seattle, Washington
