SEATTLE - Service Centers Accepting Bulbs at No Charge
Seattle City Light is helping to close the loop in the proper use of energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs by providing free recycling at two locations.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs use one third the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. That makes them a powerful tool for conserving energy. But the bulbs do contain a small amount of mercury - enough to cover the head of a pin - which means they need to be disposed of properly when they finally burn out.
"Seattle City Light encourages our customers to use energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs and to recycle them when it’s time to dispose of them," Superintendent Jorge Carrasco said. "Establishing these two recycling locations should provide a convenient service to customers who want to save energy."
The utility’s collection locations only accept compact fluorescent bulbs, not fluorescent tube lights.
"Seattle City Light is working with other local agencies to encourage producers of fluorescent lighting to develop a producer-paid recycling system that is free and convenient for consumers and businesses to dispose of compact fluorescent bulbs and fluorescent tube," Carrasco said.
The recycling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at City Light’s South Service Center, 3613 4thAve. S. (4th& Spokane) and the North Service Center, 1300 N. 97th St. (97th & Stone Way).
