Newhalem and Diablo Facilities Had Perfect Water Quality Record in 2007
SEATTLE - Seattle City Light's Newhalem and Diablo wastewater treatment plants won "Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Plant" awards from the state Department of Ecology for 2007.
The award is given to wastewater treatment plants that maintain full compliance with state water quality rules, including effluent limits, monitoring, reporting, spill prevention planning, and pretreatment.
"Ecology appreciates the extraordinary level of effort you and your team demonstrated throughout 2007," the agency's interim water quality program director, Kelly Susewind, wrote in a letter notifying Seattle City Light of the awards. "The Newhalem and Diablo wastewater treatment plants are run by dedicated operators whose efforts complement one another to ensure outstanding compliance and the protection of our state's water quality."
Ecology reviews 300 plants across the state. The Seattle City Light plants were among 78 facilities to receive the recognition.
This is the third year in a row that the Newhalem plant has earned the award and the ninth time in the 12 years since Ecology started the award in 1995.
"Sewage is treated by micro-organisims, or bugs, that eat it. It takes a unique set of skills and talents to keep those bugs happy and healthy," Director of Power Production Mike Haynes said. "Kudos should go to the Skagit treatment plant operators who maintained that delicate balancing process every day with the changing wastewater needs at the Skagit. The wastewater treatment plant operators, engineers and environmental staff will continue to maintain their high standards to protect the water quality of the Skagit River."
