No Rate Increase For Seattle City Light
Utility has the lowest rates among large U.S. cities
SEATTLE - Contrary to a recent newspaper report that seemed to suggest all Seattle utility rates would increase in 2008, Seattle City Light has no plans to raise electricity rates.
In a Sept. 26 story titled “Seattle may increase garbage, sewer rates,” The Seattle Times reported: “Garbage, sewer and drainage rates could all be going up next year in Seattle. Including electrical and water bills, the typical single-family household could pay $146 a month next year for all utilities compared with the current typical monthly bill of $139.”
Clarification:
The City Council recently approved rate changes for garbage collection, sewer service and drainage. But the newspaper’s consolidated billing comparison could give the impression that electricity rates also would rise. No changes are proposed for 2008 electricity rates.
City Light offers the lowest electricity rates in the nation among similar size cities. In 2006, utility rates were cut for the 2007/2008 biennium by an average of 8.4 percent. Residential customers currently pay about 6 cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity.
“We are committed to providing our customers with low-cost, reliable power,” Superintendent Jorge Carrasco said.
