Utility U Sparks Job Dreams For High School Students
Two Graduates Intern at Seattle Public Utilities
SEATTLE - The first class of six graduates from “Utility U” is building a bridge from alternative high school to solid careers with help from Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities.
Journalists are invited to attend an open house recognizing the Utility U graduates for their achievement from 2:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. June 5 at the Central Building, 810 3rd Ave., in the fourth floor boardroom.
The program -- a partnership between the City of Seattle and Seattle Public Schools -- teaches students from the Youth Education Program how the two utilities operate, including conservation strategies, customer service and how to read a bill. Two of the students have been selected for paid internships with Seattle Public Utilities.
Utility U gave the students an opportunity to explore different career paths, Youth Education Program teacher Chris Frye said. “We were hoping this would open their eyes to other jobs.”
In addition to their classroom studies, students visited the Cedar Falls hydroelectric dam and SPU’s water quality lab and met with utility workers to learn about their jobs. As a final project, the students built a model of an energy efficient house, which will be on display.
“They really learned a lot,” Frye said. “They’ve become far better consumers.”
