Earth Month Tip #9, Energy Audits
Go Green, Save Green by Analyzing Your Energy Use
SEATTLE - Earth Month reminds us that we need to continue to take daily steps to keep our city and our planet healthy and environmentally sustainable. An energy audit from Seattle City Light can help guide homeowners in their efforts to conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money.
City Light offers three different opportunities for customers to review their energy usage and learn about conservation opportunities for their specific circumstances.
The first is the Home Resource Profile. It is an online, interactive tool that analyzes a home’s energy, water and solid waste performance. Customers enter their electricity or water account numbers to access billing histories then answer a series of lifestyle questions to generate customized conservation suggestions. The report also will show customers how their usage compares to the average Seattle household. The entire process takes about 20 minutes. Try it at http://www.seattle.gov/conserve/homeprofile/
A Do-It-Yourself Home Audit is the second way to track your energy use. This is a step-by-step guide for identifying and improving your home’s energy efficiency. It walks users through the different parts of the home and explains what to look for. If they already have done the Home Resource Profile they should be able to focus on the key areas they identified, such as heating, water heating, cooling, lighting or whatever is appropriate. This guide is available online at http://www.seattle.gov/light/printdocs/DoItYourselfHome.PDF
Finally, City Light offers “Green Audits” in selected neighborhoods. City Light employees spend about an hour in the home looking for energy-saving opportunities then provide the homeowner with a report offering suggestions. Last year, the utility conducted 188 of these reviews. This fall, the home audits will be available in the Northgate neighborhood. City Light also provides referral information for programs available from local utilities, nonprofits and government agencies that can help offset the costs of energy-saving improvements. For more information, customers are invited to call 684-3800.
You can make a difference! Start by completing an energy audit of your home today and then let others know of your commitment. Tell people where you shop and where you work that climate protection matters.
