Volunteers go green on Skagit River for St. Paddy's Weekend
Dozens will pull trash from the river during second annual cleanup
SEATTLE - Dozens of volunteers, including employees from Seattle City Light and the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, will spend St. Patrick’s Day weekend adding to the green of the Skagit River by pulling trash from the river and its banks. Media are invited to cover the cleanup either day.
WHAT: The second annual Skagit River Cleanup was started by Marblemount-based Blue Sky Outfitters as part of National River Cleanup Week. Last year, volunteers removed more than 2,000 pounds of trash, including rusty barrels and a refrigerator.
WHO: Up to 100 volunteers are expected to walk the banks and raft the river to remove trash.
WHEN: Cleanup begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and lasts until about 5 p.m.
WHERE: Volunteers will start at Blue Sky Outfitters Skagit River Property, 61008 SR 20, Marblemount, and clear trash from a 26 mile stretch of the river between Newhalem and Rockport.
WHY: To help protect a Pacific Northwest treasure. The Skagit is home to five different species of salmon, including the Puget Sound’s biggest run of endangered Chinook. Skagit River dams have provided electricity to City Light since 1924 and currently produce about 17 percent of the utility’s energy supply.
