SEATTLE- Seattle City Light was hit hard by the windstorm that began about 6 p.m. Thursday evening and continued on into Friday morning with record winds clocked at 69 mph. At the height of the storm City Light had 175,000 customers without power, more than half of the total utility customer base.
As of 12 noon, 34,000 customers have been restored and 121,000 customers and 52 feeders are still without power. Seattle City Light expects to have an additional 41,000 customers restored by midnight Friday. By Saturday midnight, we expect to have another 50,000 customers restored. Unfortunately, there are pockets of outages that may last several days due to the amount and severity of the damage caused by the wind and downed trees. Areas that are particularly hard hit are Burien, Lake Forest Park, Shoreline, Madison Valley, Madrona, Rainier Valley, Skyway, Richmond Beach, parts of West Seattle, Normandy Park, and Tukwila.
People in these neighborhoods should have emergency kits ready that include flashlights, fresh batteries, a wind-up clock, portable radio, mylar blankets and a manual can-opener. A supply of canned and dry food is recommended along with surge protectors for sensitive electronic equipment.
City Light asks customers not call in to report power outages at this time. Crews are working on the major feeders and will concentrate on getting them back on line. However, if customers are without power later tonight, they should call the Outage Hotline (206-684-7400) to report their outage.
If customers or drivers see downed wires, City Light wants to know. To report a downed line, please call (206) 684-3000.
For more information, contact Peter Clarke (206) 386-4233.
