Seattle City Light Crews Restoring Power
Overnight winds wreak havoc with powerlines
SEATTLE— Seattle City Light was hit hard by the windstorm that began about 6 p.m. Thursday evening and continued on into Friday morning with record winds clocked at 69 mph. At the height of the storm City Light had 175,000 customers without power, more than half of the total utility customer base.
City Light crews are now starting to restore power to critical facilities such as hospitals that have been operating on back-up generators. As day light returns and the winds subside, City Light will be able to survey where the damage has occurred and start repairs.
The north area of the City Light service area was particularly hard hit. Richmond Beach, Shoreline and Lake Forest Park experienced widespread outages. The south service area also had numerous outages including Burien, White Center and Tukwilla.
South Seattle neighborhoods on Beacon Hill, Rainier Beach, Seward Park, Columbia City and many other neighborhoods experienced a loss of power as the storm progressed. West Seattle also has been without power since about 2:00 a.m. when the full force of the storm hit.
City Light has more than 200 line crew and another 100 underground crew as back-up gearing up for what will be a long day of power restoration. City Light asks customers not call in to report power outages at this time. Crews are working on the major feeders and will concentrate on getting them back on line. However, if customers are without power later tonight, they should call the Outage Hotline (206-684-7400) to report their outage.
