Local Public Relations Executive Joins City Light Team
SEATTLE-Seattle City Light Chief of Staff Sung Yang today announced the appointment of Suzanne Hartman as Director of Communications and Public Affairs for the utility. Hartman is a 20-year communications professional, accredited by both the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators.
Hartman comes to City Light after several years as a senior executive with global public relations agencies, most recently as senior vice president with Rockey Hill & Knowlton. Additionally, Hartman ran her own environmental public relations agency in Seattle for 10 years. She sold her company in 1995 to EvansGroup (now Publicis).
Hartman is no stranger to Seattle City utility programs. She designed and implemented the enormously popular and successful Seattle Recycling campaign, "Curb Waste . . . Recycle", which won numerous national and international communications awards. The recycling campaign icons, the "Recyclettes", are used today by several municipalities in the United States. Seattle's recycling and waste-reduction public education programs continue to be industry models. She also helped the Seattle Drainage and Wastewater Utility produce the "Water You Doing?" water quality campaign, featuring Bill Nye the Science Guy discussing the importance of the Seattle watershed and how to protect it.
"We are excited to have Suzanne join City Light," said City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco. "Her considerable communication skills and leadership capability will be tremendous assets to our staff. City Light is facing many challenges and opportunities, and it is essential that our customers and stakeholders are kept fully informed and involved in crucial decisions.”
“Suzanne brings many years of public information experience and professionalism to the City Light team,” said Chief of Staff Yang. “We're delighted and fortunate to have her here."
Hartman is a dual-accredited communications professional with a Masters in Public Affairs from the University of Washington and a Bachelors in Public and International Affairs from George Washington University. She has won multiple awards for a wide variety of internal and external communication campaigns.
Her rich professional career also includes work in broadcast journalism, as a legislative aide for Sen. Warren G. Magnuson, and as executive director of a community action agency serving disadvantaged citizens.
