SEATTLE- "Green Power" from a Puyallup landfill will supply much of the electricity for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centers Public Health Sciences Building, the most recent addition to the centers South Lake Union campus.

Under an agreement signed today with Seattle City Light, Fred Hutchinson will buy 867 megawatt-hours of renewable energy certificates per year from the Puyallup Landfill Energy Recovery Plant. Thats enough energy to power about 100 average Seattle homes.

Green power is energy produced by renewable resources like wind, solar, geothermal or methane from landfills. This earth-friendly energy reduces pollution as well as the production of greenhouse gases associated with fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. The Seattle Green Power program allows business and residential customers of Seattle City Light to pay a premium above regular energy rates that goes toward building or acquiring a wider range of green power resources.

"Conservation of resources and protection of the environment are an important component to our primary mission of eliminating cancer," said Scott Rusch, Vice President of Facilities and Operations for Fred Hutchinson. This agreement demonstrates our support for the development of new sources of renewable energy that go beyond City Lights existing hydro and wind resources.

"Weve had a great partnership over the years with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center," said City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco. "Together, weve initiated energy-efficiency improvements that are saving the center more than $1 million per year - money that can be used for cancer research."

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is well known as a leader in incorporating energy efficiency into new buildings and continuously improving the energy performance of existing buildings. The center regularly invests resources to minimize its environmental impact, conserve energy and model a strong environmental ethic.

Seattle Green Power, City Lights voluntary green power program, is available to all customers interested in supporting new sources of renewable energy that augment City Lights rate-based renewable portfolio. Existing green resources include the Skagit hydroelectric project - certified by the Low-Impact Hydro Institute - and a long-term agreement for more than 150 megawatts of power from the State Line wind project in Eastern Washington.

The Puyallup Energy Recovery Plant was constructed in the spring of 1999 to use methane gas, a product of landfill operations, to produce green power. Methane is produced from anaerobic bacteria that decompose organic wastes in landfills.
