Seattle Green Power’s solar electric system at Meridian Park Elementary School will be activated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, October 2, at 10 am at Meridian Park Elementary School, 17077 Meridian Ave N. (Corner of N. 175th and Meridian Ave N)
This is the first public building of any kind in Shoreline to install a solar electric system. The 2.4 kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system is mounted on the music building's roof.
Solar-power enthusiast and former schoolteacher Larry Owens envisioned the project and initiated the effort. Owens formed the nonprofit “Shoreline Solar Project” to organize neighbors, public officials, community and business leaders, and renewable energy experts around his idea to create a solar energy project at his daughter’s school.
"Our goal is to make renewable energy a part of people’s daily lives, just like recycling,” Larry says. “This project will raise awareness about solar power and sustainability among students, their parents, and our entire community."
Meridian’s 2.4 kW system is Seattle Green Power’s largest of six projects located at schools. Eight large glass panels shield rows of photovoltaic cells, which convert sunlight to electricity. A meter display shows when electricity is flowing into the building providing much of the power for the school's music room.
The project is funded by Seattle City Light’s Seattle Green Power, a voluntary contribution program. Find out more at http://www.seattle.gov/light/green/greenpower/.
