Universally Accessible Fishing Pier Debuts at Colonial Creek
More people than ever can now enjoy one of the hottest fishing spots on Diablo Lake from a newly constructed, universally accessible fishing pier at the Colonial Creek campground. Catch trout, watch fish jump and swallows fly - then, as day turns to dusk, bats swoop and swirl above, in this beautiful alpine setting.
Located near Seattle City Light’s Skagit River Hydroelectric project, the pier is easy to reach by following a nicely graded trail from the Colonial Creek campground parking lot. It is perfect for anyone using a wheelchair or who may have trouble negotiating most trails. The new pier is one of a number of recreational enhancements made possible by Seattle City Light’s 30-year federal license to operate the Skagit Project.
The North Cascades National Park, which maintains the campground, collaborated on building the pier. Project manager Gerry Cook worked with several wheelchair-mobile acquaintances, to accommodate their preferences in the design. New this summer are also a number of accessible tent-camping sites right on the lakeshore at Colonial Creek.
Expand your camping and fishing trip and explore the remote Skagit River Gorge high in the North Cascades wilderness by taking the Diablo Lake Adventure, a two-and-a-half hour escorted tour departing from the Skagit Information Center in Newhalem, Washington. Tours are offered Thursday through Monday during July and August and weekends in September.
