Seattle City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco presented a check in the amount of $207,142 to the Washington State Convention & Trade Center’s Board of Directors Chair Frank Finneran today, recognizing the Center’s achievements in saving energy throughout its facility. The installation of more than 6,000 energy efficient lighting fixtures will save the Center $129,000 per year in energy costs. The more than 2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year savings is about the amount of electricity consumed by 200 Seattle residences. The Center will make back their investment in a year. Carrasco called it a two-way win. "City Light saves money by not having to buy additional power generation. The Convention & Trade Center’s reduced overhead cost helps them be more competitive and increases Seattle’s attraction as a destination stop," Carrasco said. Seattle City Light contributed $207,142 towards the project’s total cost of approximately $323,330. Three earlier Convention Center projects saved 347,453 kWh and received $90,000 in City Light funding. Seattle City Light can often save large projects significant amounts of cash with energy efficiencies. In the four months since installation was completed in February, the Convention Center has already saved 680,000 kWh, worth $40,800. City Light will soon contract with the Convention Center on an another project replacing neon lighting with light emitting diode (LED) technology.
