Mural painted by Seattle youth and community

SEATTLE – Seattle City Light and Urban ArtWorks are celebrating the installation of a community-painted mural at the future Denny Substation site on January 30. This will be the first opportunity for the community to see the mural and to hear comments from City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco, Councilmember Mike O’Brien and Urban Artworks Executive Director Stephanie Tschida. Hot beverages and light snacks will be provided.

City Light enlisted Urban ArtWorks who brought together youth participating in King County's Education Employment Training program, and neighborhood volunteers under the supervision of a professional artist to paint the temporary mural. It will be installed on the construction fence currently bordering the future substation site along Denny Way. Being a good neighbor and property steward is a high priority for City Light. This includes taking steps to improve the Denny Substation site appearance at every project phase.

Urban ArtWorks mission is to empower young people and restore communities through the creation of indoor and outdoor art displays, enhancing positive life skills, increasing community attachment and beautifying neighborhoods.

What: Denny Substation Community Mural Celebration

Where: Southwest corner of Denny Way and Pontius (on-street parking near event site)

When: Wednesday, Jan. 30 – 3:00 p.m.

Who: Councilmember Mike O’Brien, City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco and Urban ArtWorks Executive Director Stephanie Tschida

Seattle City Light is the 10th largest public electric utility in the United States. It has some of the lowest cost customer rates of any urban utility, providing reliable, renewable and environmentally responsible power to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse gas neutral since 2005, the first electric utility in the nation to achieve that distinction.
