Solar Panels Double as Picnic Shelters for Jefferson Park
SEATTLE — On the first full day of Spring, March 21, Seattle City Light will install the final solar panel of its inaugural Community Solar project in Jefferson Park and begin generating electricity for the hundreds of customers who purchased a portion of its production.
Reporters and photographers are invited to cover the final installation. City Councilmember Mike O’Brien and dozens of customers will be on hand to celebrate completion of the project.
The Community Solar project was developed with the help of a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. This is the first such project built in Seattle City Light’s service territory. Using a creative design, the translucent solar panels form the roofs of three new picnic shelters at Jefferson Park in Beacon Hill. Shelters are an amenity that park users have sought for years.
