Brings Extensive Background in Public Power

SEATTLE – Wayne Morter has been named power operations and marketing director for Seattle City Light, Superintendent Jorge Carrasco announced.

“Wayne Morter brings a wealth of power marketing experience involving public utilities to his new role at Seattle City Light,” Carrasco said. “I am delighted to have him join our team.”

Morter comes to the publicly owned electric utility from the Lower Colorado River Authority, a public wholesale power provider for 43 publicly owned utilities based in Austin, Texas. He also has worked for Austin Energy in Texas, the City of Richmond, Va., Department of Public Utilities, and Texaco.

At City Light, Morter will oversee operations related to the utility’s seven hydroelectric dams, which have the capacity to generate 1,810 megawatts of electricity. He also will be responsible for sales of surplus energy and energy purchases, when needed, to meet customer needs.

“Maximizing revenue from surplus power sales while avoiding and limiting costs for buying power to meet short-term demand is a critical role in maintaining some of the lowest electricity rates in the country for our customers,” Carrasco said. “We are fortunate to have someone with Wayne’s talent and experience to lead this effort.”

Seattle City Light is the 10th largest public electric utility in the United States. It has some of the lowest cost customer rates of any urban utility, providing reliable, renewable and environmentally responsible power to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse gas neutral since 2005, the first electric utility in the nation to achieve that distinction.
