SEATTLE – Seattle City Light has canceled its planned underground cable injection work in the Magnolia neighborhood for the balance of the week due to cold weather.
“We didn’t want to inconvenience customers by turning off their power during the predicted cold snap,” said Phil West, Customer Service and Energy Delivery officer. “We will re-schedule the work and notify customers of the new schedule when the weather conditions improve.”
Crews need to shut off power for approximately eight hours in order to do the underground cable repair work. As underground cables age, their protective insulation deteriorates. When a crack forms, and water or dirt reaches the wires, it can lead to an unplanned power outage. Seattle City Light is using a silicone injection process to fill the cracks in the cable and extend its useful life. The process improves reliability and is far less costly than replacing the entire line. City Light has used this method in other locations including: Leschi, Laurelhurst, Arroyo Beach, and Queen Anne.
Seattle City Light is the 10th largest public electric utility in the United States. It has some of the lowest cost customer rates of any urban utility, providing reliable, renewable and environmentally responsible power to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse gas neutral since 2005, the first electric utility in the nation to achieve that distinction.
