Ballard to be first neighborhood to receive new lights
SEATTLE — How many Seattle City Light workers does it take to change a light bulb? Two, when it’s a 50-pound streetlight 25 feet above the ground being replaced safely with a 20-pound, energy-efficient LED streetlight.
Reporters and photographers are invited to join City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco, Mayor Mike McGinn, Councilmember Bruce Harrell and the crew that will install the first LED streetlights for residential neighborhoods Wednesday, July 7, at 9 a.m. in front of the Ballard Library, 5614 22nd Ave. N.W.
WHAT: Start of LED streetlight installations in Seattle – a total of 5,000 to be installed in 2010
WHEN: Wednesday, July 7, at 9 a.m.
WHO: Mayor Mike McGinn, City Councilmember Bruce Harrell, City Light
Superintendent Jorge Carrasco, and installation crew
WHERE: Outside the Ballard Library, 5614 22nd Ave. NW
WHY: To improve the reliability of streetlights, provide better quality light, reduce
maintenance needs, and lower energy consumption.
HOW: A two-person crew in a bucket truck will take down old high-pressure sodium
fixtures and install new, energy efficient LED streetlights.
Seattle City Light is the ninth largest public electric utility in the United States. It has some of the lowest cost customer rates of any urban utility, providing reliable, renewable and environmentally responsible power to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse gas neutral since 2005, the first electric utility in the nation to achieve that distinction.
