    At home
  • Keep the thermostat at 55 degrees at night or when you’re not home and 68 during the day.
  • Turn off all unnecessary lighting and unplug appliances when not in use.
  • Replace incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent lighting.
  • Defer using the clothes washer, dryer and dishwasher until after 9 pm.
  • Consider minimizing the length of time your holiday lighting is turned on in the evening.
  • Check the temperature of your refrigerator; it should be between 38 and 42 degrees. Your freezer should be between 0 and 5 degrees; a full but not packed freezer uses energy most efficiently.
    At work
  • Turn off lights in copy centers, break rooms, storage rooms and restrooms.
  • Whenever possible, turn off large overhead lights and use task lighting at your desk especially if you are working late.
  • Turn off your computer when you’re not using it.
  • Turn off unnecessary office equipment at the end of the workday -– printers, computers, shredders, and copy machines.
  • Unplug any holiday lighting, radios, coffee pots and unnecessary electrical equipment.
  • Dress warmly and wear layered clothing in the event building temperatures are lowered.
