Light Impact Technical Terms

Anadromous - Species, including salmon, which hatch in fresh water, migrate to saltwater for their adult life and then return to freshwater to reproduce
|

Diversion dam - A dam that reroutes water from its natural waterway
|
|
Dissolved Gas - Air dissolved in water when water is released down the face of a dam. Water that is supersaturated with dissolved gases can injure or kill fish and other aquatic resources.

|
Fry - young, recently hatched fish
|
|
Instream Flows - The amount of water flowing in a particular reach of a river. Fish in each river are adapted to a particular pattern of instream flow as it varies naturally over the course of the year.
|
|
Off-channel Habitat - areas off the main, fast-flowing river channel where salmon eggs are laid and fry emerge. Healthy off-channel areas are critical to salmon recovery.

|
Ramping - Changing the flow of a river through a dam powerhouse.
|
|
Ramping Rates - The speed at which we change flow of a river through a dam or powerhouse
|
|
Redd - Gravel nest where salmon deposit eggs
|
|
Run - All the stocks of a single species of fish migrating back to their river or stream of origin
|
|
Smolt - A juvenile salmon migrating to sea
|
|
Spawn - To lay and fertilize eggs
|
|
Spawning habitat - Generally clean gravel without silt or mud, preferred by salmon for spawning.
|
|
Stock - A local population of fish that returns to its river or stream of origin
|
|
Watershed - The land area that drains to a single river or stream
