Below we have provided the general requirements for residential, commercial and industrial customers to obtain new or improved electrical service from Seattle City Light.
Every chapter has information you may find useful, however, residential customers and contractors will find much of their needed basic information provided in Chapters 1,3,5, 6 and 11.
Commercial builders will find every chapter has useful information. For commercial builders in our Network areas, Chapter 8 will be especially helpful.
Before you get started in your project, please review the following helpful tips.
- Building and working clearances required from power lines can be found here.
- For residential customers upgrading or enlarging their electric service, the existing location may not be an acceptable location. Please consult with your electric service representative before initiating the change.
- If you are installing an underground service, the number of bends is an important element. SCL minimum conduit size is 3” for most residential services, large sweep rigid steel bends are required and we have material standards listing acceptable conduit manufacturers. If you are coming off a pole, SCL will specify what side (face) of the pole you must install your conduit on, and we will also need to verify the pole is acceptable for the installation. Contact your electric service representative for information.
- Seattle City Light has a “single-service” requirement (see Chapter 5), so if you are adding an ADU or short-platting to a unit-lot, SCL must approve the termination point of the service.
- For commercial jobs requiring a primary service (see table 5-1 in Chapter 5) or if you require additional distribution for an extensive multi-lot development, 18 months minimum may be necessary for engineering and material acquisition before your project can be energized.
