Tip 7 - The Amazing Fluorescent
If every U.S. household replaced just one incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent, we'd save the energy equivalent of all the energy generated by one large power plant running all year. The incandescent light bulb that most of us use today is basically the same as the one Thomas Edison invented more than 100 years ago Hasn't anyone invented anything more energy efficient? Yes. It's called a "compact fluorescent."

ENERGY FACTS
  • Compact fluorescents screw into regular sockets and emit the same light for one-fourth the energy. They also last more than 7,500 hours, about ten times longer than an incandescent.
  • If you replace an incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent, you'll save the equivalent of about 600 pounds of coal over the life of the bulb. This cuts emissions of CO2, nitrogen oxides and sulfur -- gases responsible for the greenhouse effect and acid rain -- by 65 percent to 70 percent.
  • Compact fluorescent light isn't like the cool white light we're used to seeing in offices and schools. It's close to the "warmth" of incandescents. Compact fluorescents with electronic ballasts light instantly and don't hum or flicker like other fluorescents.
  • Compact fluorescent bulbs are more expensive than incandescents, but they use so little energy that they can return purchase cost in less than two years.
SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY
  • Install compact fluorescents in your home. Use them where lights are left on for at least two hours a day. Note: Compact fluorescents are slightly larger than incandescents so they don't fit in every fixture.
  • Visit the Seattle City Light Lighting Web pages for information on where to purchase compact fluorescents.
