Unico Properties has been working in partnership with Seattle City Light and the people and businesses that occupy its office buildings to reduce energy use. So far this year, Unico has saved more than 2 million kilowatt-hours, a 10 percent reduction from last year.
- Over
the years, Unico has consistently upgraded its buildings with energy efficient technology such as electronic ballasts and watt-miser lights, energy-efficient chillers and energy management systems.
- This year, Unico has improved energy savings by turning off lights, fountains and other decorative features. Working with its janitors and security staff, Unico is making sure lights get turned off in the evening after cleaning is
completed. At Two Union Square, a modern lighting control system turns off all non-emergency lights in the building promptly at 6:15 p.m.
- Unico
has provided tenants with conservation tips and information, and their response is strongly reflected in the overall energy savings.
- Working
with the real estate community, Unico has shared ideas and resources with other building owners and managers to help them reduce their energy use and avoid the high cost of wastefulness.
- Unico's new "Kill-a-Watt" campaign, focusing on operating teams and tenants, will help the company realize further short-term energy savings. Unico is working with
City Light to develop the next round of long-term conservation retrofits.
