This year the Four Seasons Olympic Hotel has applied the same attention to conservation as it has to hospitality.
  • In January, the hotel turned off all decorative tree lighting around the hotel. Typically, this lighting is left on through March. That action saved about 30,000 kilowatt-hours per month, enough energy for 30 average-size homes for one month.
  • The hotel formed a Power Patrol -- a group of employees that encourages colleagues to conserve electricity in offices. The Power Patrol reminds employees to turn off lights and computer monitors when they leave the office and shut down computers at the end of each business day.
  • The hotel posts conservation tips on its employee bulletin board each week, suggesting ways employees can save energy at home and at work.
  • The hotel's computer monitors now go into sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity, saving an estimated 60 watts per hour.
  • The hotel has completed a major retrofit of HVAC, steam, cooling and lighting systems. The improvements have yielded annual savings of more than 900,000 kilowatt-hours, 11 percent of the building's energy use.
