Background
  • The Neighborhood Power Project started in 1995 in Fremont. Ballard is the eighth neighborhood.
  • NPP goals are to:
    • Save precious resources like electricity and water
    • Help coordinate city services to neighborhood residents
    • Help build community
  • Since 1995, the project has served four neighborhoods north of the ship canal-Ballard, Fremont, Greenwood, and Lake City; and four south of the canal-Georgetown, Southeast, Central, and Delridge.
  • The project has been in Ballard since January 2003. The project will close in June and then move on to the North Rainier/International District neighborhood.

Accomplishments in Ballard
  • Over 270 volunteers distributed over 13,000 compact fluorescent bulbs to Ballard residents. This provided energy savings for residents and Seattle City Light.
  • Over 90 businesses participated in the Smart Business Program which offered incentives to upgrade their existing lighting to energy efficient fixtures.
  • The project distributed over 800 water efficient showerheads and faucet aerators.
  • Ballard residents reduced their consumption by over 1.3 million kWh, enough to power 130 homes for a year.

Interdepartmental Collaborations
  • Seattle City Light, the Seattle Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit and Ballard Block Watch Captains participated in Night Out Against Crime in August of 2003 and handed out over 3,000 compact fluorescent bulbs.
  • Seattle City Light, Seattle Public Utilities, Department of Neighborhoods and the Parks Department worked together on the Clean & Green Seattle Initiative that targeted Ballard in May of this year.
  • The commitment and dedication to volunteerism and conservation by citizens of Ballard has been outstanding. It is reflected in the conservation efforts, achieving kilowatt-hour savings that greatly exceeded our expectations.
