Utility Construction Worker Apprentice
Hiring Process
Candidates must successfully complete and score competitively on:
Written application and a review of their complete driving record
- Written test on electrical theory, mathematics and mechanical reasoning
- Working test demonstrating knowledge of tools, electrical equipment, and the ability to perform work functions
- Oral panel interview
- Reference check - three work related references of your choice will be contacted
- Pre–Employment physical – (A medical examination of the candidate to determine whether he/she can perform the mental and physical functions of the job.)
- Drug test - (Apprentices must have the ability to obtain a Class "A" CDL and under Federal Law they will be randomly drug tested throughout their career.)
- Background check - (Includes criminal history, driving record, education, and employment verification.)
UCWA Overview & Expectations:
- Utility Construction Worker Apprenticeship includes 18 months (3,000 hour) of on-the-job training in the use of hand and small power tools, performing minor repairs to equipment, loading and unloading materials, equipment and supplies, manually digging trenches and other labor extensive projects.
- Utility Construction worker apprentices may be required to drive heavy equipment and provide work site protection by setting cones for traffic control.
- Upon satisfactory completion of the Utility Construction Worker Apprenticeship Program, apprentices advance to journey-level Utility Construction Worker positions.
- Apprentices will receive CDL training and must obtain a Class "A" CDL. Under Federal Law, employees with a CDL endorsement will be randomly drug tested throughout their career.
- UCW apprentices attend, at least, 144 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction one evening a week throughout the school year.
