Work planned on: Melrose Avenue Infrastructure Construction

Seattle City Light crews will be building new underground infrastructure to bring electrical service to a condominium and retail development at 301 East Pine Street. Seattle City Lights actual construction will occur on Melrose Avenue between East Pine and East Pike Street.

Crews will be trenching between existing electrical vaults located on either side of Melrose Avenue near Melrose Market. The project will maintain electrical reliability for the neighborhood and once the 301 East Pine Street development is complete, crews will underground the overhead lines in the immediate area.

Projected Duration/Timing:

  • Start and Duration: April 29, 2014 construction staging will begin. Project will take about three weeks.
  • Phasing: Crews will start by excavating the west sidewalk of Melrose Avenue. After adding conduit, crews will then trench across the street to the east sidewalk. See map.
  • Schedule: Daytime work is planned for May 1 and 2 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nighttime work is planned for May 4 and will last approximately two weeks. Nighttime work will begin at 10 p.m. and end at 8.a.m.

Project Impacts:

  • No scheduled power outages.
  • Traffic lane restrictions. Intermittent street closures will occur during trenching across the street.
  • All trenches will be plated when crews are not present.
  • Impacts will be one section at a time. Adjacent parking will be impacted while crews are working.
  • May 1 and 2 work will involve saw cutting the street and breaking concrete. After that, a backhoe will be used to remove debris. Customers should expect noise, especially during the first two days of work.

Once the civil construction is complete, crews will install new cable, which will take several days. This work will be less intrusive, involving up to two trucks and line workers pulling cable into place and working inside the underground vaults.

Schedule: Planned 4/29/2014 to third week of May
Begin: April 29, 2014 construction staging will begin
Duration: Approximately 3 weeks
