Work planned on: Cable Replacement Near Leschi Elementary School

Seattle City Light plans to replace the underground electrical cable north of Leschi Elementary School and we want you to be aware of this project.

In 2009 and 2010, we tested and rehabilitated aging underground electrical cable in the Leschi neighborhood with a silicone injection. About 27 percent of the cable was not suited for silicone injection; including two segments north of the school. This cable must be replaced. The work involves two phases: civil construction to install the conduits for the new cable and electrical construction to pull the cable into place. (See Leschi Cable Replacement Map)

What You Can Expect:

  • Trenching to install the conduits
    • Trenching work will occur in the public right-of way (i.e. streets and sidewalks)
    • Trench will be 18-30 inches wide and affected streets, sidewalks and driveways will be completely restored.
  • Parking and traffic
    • Temporary parking and traffic restrictions will be in place.
    • Flaggers or uniformed police officers will direct traffic.
    • Crews will do their best to maintain access to driveways
    • Trench will be plated at night.
  • Planned power outages so crews can work safely
    • Once conduits are installed, there will be up to two planned outages to pull in the new cable; the planned outages will NOT occur on consecutive days.
    • Notification will take place by letter or door hanger at least 48 hours before the outage.
Project Timeline:
  • Project duration is July 15 to August 19 for the intersection of 32nd Avenue and E. Spruce Street, which allows Seattle Department of Transportations road restoration be complete before Leschi Elementary School reopens.
  • Work at the intersection of 31st Avenue and E. Spruce Street will follow and may occur after school has started for the year.
  • Daily work hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some weekend work possible.
9/16/2013 Update: Civil construction is complete.
Schedule: July 15 - August 19, 2013
