We will be rebuilding a vault and trenching across James Street at the alley between 2nd and 3rd avenues. The work will increase the reliability of the downtown electrical network by replacing old clay conduit and underground power lines.
The work will start after the first of the year. Daily work hours are from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Uniformed police officers will maintain traffic flow. Parking will be restricted on both sides of James Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues. Check back here for updates.
3/7/2013 Update:
The project requires installing a new custom-built underground vault on the north side of James Street at the alley. This is necessary to maintain the new power lines once they are installed. A private contractor has taken measurements to design and build the vault off site. They will deliver the vault in approximately two to three weeks. Crews will then install it over a period of several days.
Impacts: Currently, parking is not available on either side of James Street. This is done so that traffic can continue to pass in both directions around the vault excavation. Once the vault is installed, parking will be available during the evening and weekends while the project continues with the conduit construction.
Timeline: The anticipated completion date is scheduled for May 2013.
Thank you for your patience during this important work. Reduced-price parking is available by visiting, www.downtownseattle.com/parking/. From there you can locate a $3 per-hour parking space. Sidewalks will be open unless there are intermittent closures.
