Thank you for your patience last year as we made critical improvements to our substation transformers in your neighborhood. We are coming back to remove and install a second transformer starting in mid-April.
Project Overview
When: From the middle of April to the end of September
What: Replacing a transformer
Why: Upgrading aging equipment
Impacts: Construction, noise, parking and traffic impacts at North Substation
The work will be noisy as we jackhammer old concrete and prepare the substation for installation of the new transformer. This jack hammering is the first step in the work and will last about three to four weeks.
Under the City of Seattle’s noise ordinance, any loud work must be performed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. General construction can take place from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
We expect some traffic and parking restrictions along 8th Avenue NE for several days during the middle of April to the end of May and during the last week of June to the middle of July. Heavy equipment such as a crane and concrete pumper will be staged along the street to remove the old transformer and install the new one. Flaggers will be used as needed to maintain traffic flow. We will do our best to minimize the street and parking impacts.
After the above impacts, the rest of the work will be confined on-site at the substation and should not cause any disruptions for the neighborhood.
We appreciate your patience as we make these improvements to the substation to ensure reliable and safe electrical service to you and all City Light customers.
