Green Power Accomplishments
Project Summary
Spruce Street School now occupies a renovated building in the Denny Triangle Neighborhood. Construction started in May 2005 and included a Playground in the Sky. Not only are children able to play on the roof, but as part of the vision to create a greener building the school added solar panels to one section of the rooftop. The 8 solar panels were installed in March 2006 and instantly began to generate excitement and anticipation among the students and staff - along with solar energy!
The solar panels, also known as "solar electric modules", provide real learning in real time about the critical issues around power production and consumption. Seeing green power in action brings the learning into their world. David Stitzhal, a parent at the school led the effort to bring solar panels to the roof. The utility meter is strategically placed so the students have easy access and can integrate the information into class projects and studies.
