Project Summary
Ever since reopening in the fall of 2002 after a top-to-bottom renovation, historic Greenwood Elementary has been a showcase for how to meld green, energy-efficient construction with historic preservation. The building's exterior facade and many interior features were restored to reflect their 1920's craftsman style, but beneath the surface is 21st century technology and design standards. In addition to a state-of-the-art building envelope and climate control system, the plan for the new Greenwood Elementary included photovoltaic panels artfully concealed to retain the building's historic character. These began producing electricity in the fall of 2002, making Greenwood Elementary the first Seattle Green Power project to come on line.
