Hydroelectric Maintenance Machinist Apprentice

Hiring Process

Candidates must successfully complete and score competitively on:

  • Hydroelectric Maintenance Machinist at workWritten application and a review of their complete driving record
  • Written test on algebra, some elementary mechanics, and mechanical reasoning
  • Working test demonstrating knowledge of machine shop tools, mechanical aptitude, and dexterity and speed
  • Oral panel interview
  • Reference check - three work related references of your choice will be contacted
  • Pre-Employment physical - (A medical examination of the applicant to determine whether he or she can perform the mental and physical functions of the job.)
  • Background check - (Includes criminal history, driving record, education, and employment verification.)
Hydroelectric Overview & Expectations
  • This is an 8,000 hour training program to become a journey-level Hydroelectric Maintenance Machinist.
  • Apprentices perform progressively more complex and physically demanding work assignments such as: maintaining and repairing equipment and machinery, analyzing and diagnosing problems, and disassembling and machining unavailable parts.
  • Apprentices are part of a crew that maintain and repair large hydroelectric turbine generators in dams. Turbine generators were installed in the 1930's-1960's, and still work efficiently because of regular maintenance. Most of the worn parts are recreated or repaired at the South Service Center machine shop by machinists and apprentices.
  • Apprentices attend, at least 144 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction one evening a week throughout each school year. Apprentices must complete 576 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction by the completion of their 8000 hour apprenticeship.
