Academic AchievementAfter-School ServicesThe Seattle Human Services Department funds community-based organizations to provide after-school services to about 800 youth per year in safe and welcoming environments. Most participants are ages 10-19 and live in low-income families of color in central, southeast and southwest Seattle neighborhoods. Funded programs engage Seattle youth with a variety of culturally and age-appropriate activities to help them succeed in school; strengthen their social, academic and leadership skills; and increase ties to their community. Most of these programs help students improve their study skills and preparation for college. Parent involvement is also emphasized. After-school youth services have been supported by the City of Seattle General Fund since 1983. Funding awards are determined through a competitive process that is conducted by the department at least once every four years. Funding between cycles depends upon program performance and funding availability. The current four-year cycle ends on December 31, 2009. In 2008, $702,000 in local funding is provided to agencies offering after-school youth development and educational support services. The federally-funded Weed & Seed initiative also allocates approximately $200,000 to after-school programs in southeast and southwest Seattle/White Center. 2008 Funded Agencies and Programs
