children consuming meals at a summer program siteThe Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), also known as the Summer Meals Program, was established to ensure that children receive nutritious meals during the summer months when school is not in session. SFSP is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and administered by state agencies, who reimburse providers who serve free, healthy breakfasts, lunches, and snacks to children and teens age 18 and younger.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) administers the program in Washington state; and Seattle Human Services (HSD), Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Public Schools, and United Way of King County (UWKC) work together to recruit and support local sites here in Seattle.

COVID-19 Changes:

This summer, sites will operate June 21 through August 25, 2021, with additional precautions in place to minimize risk of illness while serving meals to the community. Sanitation and distancing practices will be followed in accordance with CDC and Public Health - Seattle & King county guidelines. Meals will be served in a more flexible manner than typical summers to allow for community safety. Public sites open to all will be using a USDA waiver to allow for meals to be taken off-site rather than eaten in a congregate meal setting at the site. It also allows for meals to be picked up by parents for youth who are not present. Some sites might also follow a waiver guideline that lets them hand out more than one day's meals at a time to minimize the number of visits a family must make to the site.
