Shelter and HousingFurniture BankThe Church Council of Greater Seattle’s Sharehouse runs the only free furniture bank in King County. The bank provides free furniture and housewares to homeless and formerly homeless individuals and families who are moving into stable housing. Moving into a new apartment is expensive, often requiring paying deposits and first and last month’s rent. If a family is unable to afford basic household items such as furniture and kitchen wares, the danger of slipping back into homelessness increases. Sharehouse staff collects new and used furniture and housewares from individuals, families and area businesses. It distributes them to about 2,000 newly established homes each year, referred by more than 60 agencies across the county. Each year, Sharehouse saves an estimated 400 tons of unwanted furniture from being dumped in Puget Sound area landfills. The City of Seattle General Fund allocation to Sharehouse was $75,930 in 2007; the 2008 allocation is $78,739.
