Child Care

Child Care Health Program

The City of Seattle’s Child Care Health Program:

  • Improves the ability of child care providers to deliver high-quality services
  • Provides a safe, secure environment for children and youth
  • Improves the health status of children and youth

The City contracts with Public Health - Seattle & King County to provide the following services to agencies serving more than 3,500 children through the Child Care Assistance Program, Free and low-cost preschool programs for three- and four-year-olds (ECEAP and Step Ahead) and school-based after-school programs. These services include:

  • Consultation on health and safety issues
  • Program assessments and monitoring for compliance and quality of care as it relates to physical, mental, emotional and nutritional health components of the early childhood education and child care programs
  • On-site visits, observations, and review of program policies and procedures
  • Staff training
  • Child psychologist to provide expertise and support for child behavior issues
  • Nutritionists and health educators
  • Additional resources and referrals

In 2009, the City of Seattle Human Services Department is providing approximately $268,641 of General Fund and Families and Education Levy funding to the Seattle and King County Public Health to provide these services.
