After-school ServicesCulturally Relevant Support for School-age ChildrenSeattle is a diverse city that includes families from many different ethnic and cultural groups. Many of these families face language, cultural and financial barriers that make it difficult to be involved in their children’s education and to effectively support their children’s development. The City of Seattle funds five culturally specific afterschool programs for children ages 5 to 14 years old. These programs serve nearly 200 children each year in central and south Seattle. Contracted agencies provide culturally appropriate after-school services that are coordinated with schools and are designed to meet the unique cultural and linguistic needs of bilingual and bicultural children. Programs provide academic and cultural enrichment activities, homework assistance, tutoring, and family involvement as well as a variety of social and recreational activities. The City of Seattle is providing approximately $202,609 in 2009 to nonprofit, community-based organizations providing culturally relevant support for school age children. 2009 Funded Agencies and Programs
