Why Volunteer?

Helping Others

When volunteering your time to help others, there are numerous ways to accomplish your positive intentions with varying levels of involvement. If you are trying to find a way to give back to others, you could start with something small like aiding a neighborhood in beatifying their surroundings. Join clean-up groups that aim to keep streets tidy. More involved tasks include starting a neighborhood garden or fixing up the local playground to provide safe outlets for the youth of today.

Through helping others, you may also rekindle your passion for your craft. For example, sometimes lawyers forget the reason why they entered their profession. Volunteer your time to fight injustice and lessen fear of the judicial system by providing free counsel for those in need.

Make A Difference

Making a difference in the lives of others could be as simple as joining a Big Sister/Big Brother program. The level of accomplishment one feels from playing their part in shaping the life of a needy youth is grand. Some volunteers teach their newfound friends how to play a sport, while others simply listen when a child needs to be heard.

You never truly know the depths you can reach with a desperate teen until you volunteer your time. Many misguided children could have been saved and nurtured with just the slightest piece of positive encouragement. This is your chance to become part of an extended family and make a difference in the lives of many.

Connect With the Community and Culture

Some volunteers connect with the community by seeking out neighborhood rebuilding projects, such as constructing or upgrading homes. You may also offer your career services to a family going through a difficult time. Why not assist an elderly member of the community by volunteering your time to take him or her to the grocery store once a week? With these fountains of wisdom, you may reconnect with the past through facilitating dialogue during your outings.

When holidays come around, explore different avenues of your culture by participating in cultural activities. During Thanksgiving, volunteer to serve food or deliver meals throughout the community. You may also donate clothes during the winter/Christmas season to community outreach programs.

Meet New People & Make New Friends

Helping others isn’t always achieved through the donation of funds. Sometimes, the most valued and wealthy gestures come from volunteering your time. While offering monetary assistance to help rebuild a neighborhood is rather helpful, it is much more rewarding to get out into the community and lend a hand.

Why not pick up a hammer and nails to become part of something much greater? This is an exciting opportunity to meet and make new friends. Attending community meetings also allow you to mingle with others, as well as to see some of the areas of need you might be of some assistance.

Put Your Skills To Good Use

Have you ever felt unappreciated at work or sighed, “Is this what I went to school for?” There are plenty of opportunities to put your education and life experiences to good use. One of the best parts of volunteering your time to help others is the feeling you receive from sharing your skills or knowledge.

Just one look of appreciation or kind words of praise is enough to send you brimming with warmth, pride, and happiness. Studied English in college? Are you a master at writing? You could join a literacy group to help others learn to read. You could also volunteer with a business prep organization and teach others the ins and outs of the career world.

In conclusion, the possibilities are endless when it comes to helping others and giving back to the community. Volunteering or donating is a perfect chance to embrace your civic duty as a member of an extended community. Taking action against the injustice, weaknesses, tragedy, and shortcomings of society not only empowers those you help, but also strengthens your character as a responsible human being.
