HHCC Board Meeting January 20, 2010 

The next meeting of the Hawthorne Hills Community Council is scheduled for January 20, 2010 at 7:30 pm in the first floor Conference Room, Bldg. 30, Warren G. Magnuson Park. Community members are always welcome to attend!

New School Assignment Plan Released 

The Seattle School District has released maps showing attendance boundaries for its' new assignment plan. Under the proposed plan, K-5 students in Hawthorne Hills and Windermere will be in the attendance area for Sand Point Elementary, which the district proposes to re-open for the 2010 school year. SR520 Mediation Status 

Trustee Arden Forrey has provided a report on the current status of the State Route 520 Mediation process and the implications for our community. The process was originated in May 2007 from Senate Bill 6099 and has a number of participants that include north-end Seattle Community groups; key north-end participants are: University District and Ravenna/Bryant. Meetings began in Fall 2007.

At present three of the original 12 design options remain: A, K, and L. The K and L options feature traffic diversion north of the ship can by either a tunnel (K, also known as the Parkway) or a bridge (L). The A option features a route similar to the existing Montlake exits.

Seattle Children's Hospital Expansion 

Are You Concerned? The Hospital plans to nearly triple in size in a residential neighborhood. For more information, see Children's Action Coalition.

The hospital has more information, including master plan documents and information on Citizen's Advisory Committee meetings, on their web site.

Burke Gilman PDA Board Vacancies 

If you are interested in serving on the board for the Burke Gilman Public Development Authority, see here. The Burke Gilman PDA (BGPDA) manages the former Coast Guard property in northeast Seattle, near Children’s Hospital. At present, facilities include Ronald McDonald House, Provail housing, Burke-Gilman Apartments (subsidized and market-rate housing), The Children’s Center, and housing under the auspices of the Capitol Hill Housing Improvement Program (CHHIP).

Disaster Skills Training at Magnuson Park 

Seattle Office of Emergency Management is offering several classes this fall/winter covering topics such as Disaster First Aid and Search and Rescue. For more information, see this flyer.

Fire Station 38 

Mayor Nickels took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fire Station 38 on September 10. Construction is scheduled to begin soon at 4004 NE 55th Street, just north of Metropolitan Market.

Aging In Place 

A grass roots community called North East Seattle Together or NEST is now forming that will be dedicated to insuring that as we grow older, we can continue to live in our own home, in the neighborhood we love. It is an innovative, new approach to aging in place that is inspiring neighbors to organize, incorporate, and take charge.
