TOUR OF THE DUNN GARDEN

Date & Time: Friday, October 3, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Location: meet at CUH parking lot (see below)
Fee: $35; pre-registration required

As part of the year-long Olmsted centennial celebration, the Center for Urban Horticulture and the E. B. Dunn Garden Historic Trust are offering an opportunity to visit the historic Dunn Garden and learn about the Olmsted-inspired elements
that have made this garden one of Seattle's treasures. In this woodland
setting of deciduous shade trees and native conifers, cyclamen and aconitum
are in abundance amidst the sweeping expanse of lawn. Transportation and
garden admission are included in the fee.

The Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH) is located at 3501 NE 41st Street,
Seattle, northeast of the main University campus.

A Bicycle Tour through Seattle's Olmsted Landscapes

Meet: Volunteer Park Water Tower

It's the Centennial of the Olmsted-designed park system and what better way to see the parks than by bike? Join David Robinson from the Cascade Bicycle Club for a guided tour through some of Seattle's Olmsted landscapes. The tour will focus on Olmsted parks and parkways with spectacular displays of fall colors: After touring the Olmsted exhibit atop the Water Tower, and the newly-restored lily ponds in Volunteer Park, the tour will head south to visit numerous Olmsted landscapes including Frink and Colman Parks, Lake Washington Boulevard and Denny Blaine Park. Rain will cancel ride.

Here is your opportunity to learn about the animals and plants in our backyard at Seward Park utlizing the internet. Through the computer screen and a magnifying glass you will learn the secrets to the magnificent forest. This class consists of hands-on science activities and computer research. Participants will do research in the computer lab one week and the next week you will go on a nature hike at Seward Park with a Naturalist. Transportation will be provided to Seward Park from Rainier Community Center. Parents are welcome to participate in the Nature activities. Nature activities will require appropriate dress.

Celebrate the Olmsted Centennial Anniversary by enjoying an Olmsted-designed park! All are invited to join the Seattle Parks Foundation, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Friends of Schmitz Park, Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks, and more, for a walk through this natural preserve park. We’ll start at the Alki Community Center, just a few blocks northwest of Schmitz Park, and proceed to the Schmitz Boulevard entrance. The tour will cover many trails and hiking paths that wind through Schmitz Park, a valuable preserve of Seattle’s old growth forest. Learn more about the history of the Schmitz Park’s 53 wooded acres, and current projects in the works to improve the area, while simply enjoying the natural serenity of the preserve.

Walking Tour by Arthur Lee Jacobson: The U.W. Campus in Fall

The enormous U.W. campus contains tremendous diversity of landscape plants. Many rare trees and shrubs have been planted by forestry professors, botanists, and the gardening staff. This tour will focus on the outstanding specimens for fall color. At this time of year is the greatest number of tantalizing fruits, berries, seeds and nuts.

Seattle Parks and Recreation has created an attractive and informative exhibit commemorating the centennial of the city's Olmsted park plan. The exhibit includes historic photographs and maps, historical information about the Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm, a description of the Olmsteds' comprehensive plan for Seattle's parks and boulevards, the implementation of the plan in the last century, and a glimpse at the future of park planning and development.
