Seattle School Programs

For over 50 years, the Seattle Fire Department has provided fire safety education to students in both public and private Seattle schools.  This tradition continues today with a variety of fire and life safety programs for teachers and students.

Providing fire safety education, injury prevention messages and positive community role models are the goals of the School Age Program.

The safety and well being of school age children is important to the Seattle Fire Department, especially when it comes to their knowledge of important fire and safety skills.  For that reason we have developed several resources to help you teach your school age group about fire safety.

Seattle Fire Department's Activity WorkbookSeattle Fire Department Activity Book:  A Resource for Teachers

This workbook consists of two educational levels.  Level 1 is for younger school age children and Level 2 is for older school age children.  Each level is divided into four chapters:

  • Home Fire Safety
  • Fire Safety Skills
  • Injury Prevention
  • Firefighters

With a clear protective cover and spiral binding, it is perfect for copying and sharing with your students and the workbook is yours to keep.

Safety Suitcase

The Seattle Fire Department's Public Education Section has developed a fire safety education kit for use with children in grades 1-3.  Packed into a convenient suitcase, the lessons are suitable for a variety of learning styles.  Each lesson presented in the Safety Suitcase includes content and activities that meet a variety of learning styles and goals.  Lesson plans include:

  • Escape planning
  • Stop! Drop! and Roll!
  • 911 is for Emergencies

The Safety Suitcase can be borrowed for two weeks at a time.  If you wish to borrow it, you must pick it up from, and return it to, the Fire Marshal's Office.

Firefighters Reading in the Classroom

In support of literacy programs, Seattle Firefighters can be scheduled to come to your classroom or library to read to the students.  Just be sure to have some books on hand for the firefighters to read.  Please remember that firefighters must remain in-service during all their visits.  This means that they could be late, have to leave early or not come at all if they have to respond to an emergency.

Firefighter Visit or Station Tour

Basic Information for all Firefighter Visits

  • Children must be ages 5 or older to participate (children under 5 should visit our Preschool Program Web page).
  • The school group must be in the City of Seattle.
  • Firefighter visits must be scheduled at least four weeks in advance.
  • Firefighter visits last 20-40 minutes.
  • Only one visit per day, per fire station can be scheduled.  If you have more than one group, you will need to submit a separate registration form for each group and their visits will need to be scheduled on different days.
  • Visits may not be scheduled earlier than 10:00 AM
  • The firefighter visit may be cancelled at the last minute with no notification due to emergency response or firefighter training requirements.
  • The Seattle Fire Department does not do fire safety assemblies.  For large groups of children we prefer to break them into age appropriate groups (i.e., K-2, 3-5, etc.) and schedule separate visits for those groups.

Firefighter Visit Options

You may choose Option A or Option B.  You cannot select both options.  Be sure to select the option that is most appropriate for your group.

Option A - Visit a Fire Station

  • Maximum number of participants is 25 (includes chaperones)
  • Requires 1 chaperone for every 5 children.  Fire stations are active places for firefighter work.  This must be kept in mind when touring the station.  Appropriate ratios of children to chaperones are required.
  • The tour is only for the children in the preschool/daycare group (i.e. no siblings or other children).

Option B - Firefighters Visit Your Facility

  • Minimum group size is 15.
  • A parking area must be provided where the fire engine/truck can get in and out quickly in the event of an emergency.
  • An adequate number of chaperones must be present to quickly clear children from the fire engine/truck if there is an emergency.
  • The tour is only for the children in the school group (i.e. no siblings or other children).
