EMT Requirements

In order to receive a final hire offer from the Seattle Fire Department, candidates must possess Washington State EMT Certification or documentation stating the candidate has completed EMT coursework and is eligible to be certified in Washington State.

Washington State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification is not required in order to submit an application for Entry Level Firefighter.

For questions regarding EMT Certification call the King County Medic One offices at (206) 296-4693 or visit the King County Medic One web site.

Out of State EMT Certification

Candidates who hold out-of-state or national registry EMT certification must secure a reciprocal EMT Certification through King County. View/Download EMS Reciprocity Requirements for King County and Washington State (PDF).

For Candidates that are not EMT Certified

A limited number of eligible candidates will be offered EMT courses at no cost through the Seattle Fire Department. This class is usually offered once per year.  The class is filled by eligible list rank order and need.

Selection to the Department sponsored EMT class is not an assurance of a hire offer nor an assurance of participation in the Pre-Employment process.

The Seattle Fire Department encourages candidates to explore other EMT Certification opportunities such as those provided by the colleges listed below.  Please contact the school for more information.
