Fire Code Development Process

Seattle's Fire Code is based on the International Fire Code, and includes city-specific amendments as approved by the Mayor and City Council. The 2015 Seattle Fire Code was adopted by City Council on September 26, 2016. Use of the new code became mandatory beginning January 1, 2017.

The city develops new editions of the fire code every three years. The Seattle Fire Department will begin work on the 2018 Seattle Fire Code this year.

Because of its importance for residents and businesses, the Seattle Fire Code is developed by the Seattle Fire Department in cooperation with the Seattle Fire Code Advisory Board, a volunteer advisory board that represents the interests of the public, organized labor and local business, industry and technical trades.
