Dear Seattle Citizen:

You elected me to the City Council just two years ago, and it's been an honor serving you. I've worked hard for you as Chair of the Housing, Human Services and Civil Rights Committee and together we've accomplished much. We've:

•Expanded affordable housing choices citywide and established a $1 million low-income housing preservation fund.

•Increased funding for Social Services, including childcare and senior programs, emergency health and dental care, and domestic violence prevention.

•Created the first Council Committee on Civil Rights to strengthen our anti-discrimination laws and better protect the fundamental human rights of all people.

•Strengthened our Conservation Efforts and Environmental Protections, including ending logging in the city-owned Cedar River Watershed.

I've also worked hard to reform government by making it more open, accessible, and accountable to the people. I instituted public comment time in all my committee meetings and hold weekly constituent days in my office. And I've crossed the city touring 13 neighborhood districts, visiting small businesses, community centers, and senior and childcare facilities to learn and seek advice from citizens. My top priorities for the next term are:

Protecting Our High Quality Of Life - Our biggest challenges as we move into the next millennium are to ease traffic congestion, keep housing affordable, and protect our natural environment.

Promoting Equality, Understanding & Respect - Laws alone will not end centuries of institutional racism, gender bias, and prejudices. We must promote common respect and greater understanding between peoples.

Providing For Human Needs - Despite the region's great economic prosperity, disparity and hardship have increased for many hard working people. Everyone should have livable wages, quality childcare, and decent housing.

As an architect and former community activist, I provide a unique experience as the Council debates and considers tough choices facing our rapidly changing, but still great city. As a Seattle native, I live in the north end with my wife and two young boys. I'm honored to have early endorsements from the King County Labor Council, Sierra Club, Seattle Green Party and Washington Conservation Voters.

For me, human needs will always come first. I'm seeking reelection because I'm committed to continuing the good work we have begun. I ask for your vote. Thank you!
